Curriculum

The Orthopedics program is a 4 year program following an AOA internship. The resident will participate in a minimum of 36 months locally of general orthopedics. The other 12 months may be out rotations if approved by the Evaluating Committee of the American Osteopathiv Academy of Orthopedics and by St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. These may be in orthopedic subspecialty surgery, other AOA approved residency programs, research or basic sciences. Each resident’s program shall be considered unique in itself and evaluated individually.  

First Year

 

a.       Lectures on ortho service, wet labs

b.       OPTI lectures when on ortho services

c.       Evaluate ortho patients and trauma call

d.       Pre & post-op evaluation and care of patients

e.       Out patient ortho clinic & post clinic seminars. Developing patient panel

f.        Ortho research basics and lecture technique & development

g.       Ortho surgery basics

h.       Casting – joint injects

i.         Ortho radiology

j.        No out rotations

k.       Progress to independent activity with senior oversight

Second Year

a.       No out rotations

b.       Course in surgical orthopedic anatomy

c.       Become computer competent to generate lectures and in use of AOAO Caselog system

d.       Attend instructional courses as:

            1.  Attend in-house EHR instructions

      2.      ASIF basic course

      3.   Basic sciences in orthopedics

      4.   Pediatric courses

5.       ATLS

e.       Weekly lectures, Journal Club and monthly Morbidity and Mortality Review adhering to the suggested Clinical CORE Curriculum as revised by the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, April 4, 1995. OPTI lectures and WET labs (See didactic schedule).

f.        Progress to use surgical instruments, techniques, pre and postoperative care, x-ray techniques, participate in surgical cases as determined by his or her ability.

g.       Participate in orthopedic clinic evaluation and treatment of patients and develop a panel of clinic patients, and attend post clinic seminars

h.       Participate in the care and management of emergency room cases and other outpatient cases.

i.         Maintain knowledge of basic Osteopathic principles.

j.        Maintain residents logs in AOAO Caselog system in a timely fashion

k.       Write an annual scientific paper for last three of his/her four years

 

Third, Fourth and the first six months of the Fifth years:

 

a.       Begin and progress supplemental out rotations for 12 months

b.       Attend instructional courses

c.       Weekly lectures, Journal Club, monthly Mortality & Morbidity Review, OPTI lectures and WET labs (See Didactic schedule)

d.       Continue in case management, pre and post operative care of surgical cases, intervention determined by his/her ability

e.       Participate in orthopedic clinic and continue developing panel of clinic patients and post clinic seminars

f.        Continue participation with emergency room cases and other outpatient cases

g.       Supervisory help to first year residents, students and interns

 

Fifth Year:

 

a.       The last six months of the program will be spend at the primary training center

b.       He/she will continue in the aforementioned responsibilities

c.    Supervisory help to junior residents & participate and develop administrative skills
