Our Program
The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center is approved for 14 residents. Presently, the program consists of 12 residents with plans to expand to 14 residents by the 2007 academic year. The residency currently consists of a mixture of traditional and fast track interns and will continue to accept both into the OB/Gyn program.
Residents receive training at a tertiary center, as well as at several community hospitals, which provides diversity in patient care and management. Our base hospital, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, is a tertiary care facility serving the northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan region with a potential patient population of appromixately 1,500,000 people, and it is one which offers a broad range of patient encounters. High risk obstetrical patients are managed by OB/Gyn residents working with an in-house attending. The OB/Gyn residency is supported by 30+ OB/Gyn attendings which offers residents the opportunity to learn a variety of techniques in performing a particular procedure or surgery.
The Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) service is covered exclusively by osteopathic OB/Gyn residents, allowing for the management of high risk obstetrics. Residents rotate for 3 months with Dr. Saleh, the MFM attending, during their residency. Residents will also have the opportunity to work with Dr. Croak, a Mayo Clinic fellowship trained urogynecologist. Residents spend 4 months with Dr. Croak learning how to evaluate urodynamic studies. They also receive training and the opportunity to refine their skills in pelvic reconstruction and surgical correction. Reproductive Endocrinology Infertility training is provided by Nicholas Shamma, M.D. Dr. Shamma is a graduate of Yale University in OB/Gyn and fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology Infertility.
Our formal didactic series, Grand Rounds, occur on Friday afternoon and with 3 hours of protected lecture time from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Lectures begin with Dr. Saleh's MFM conference. The MFM conference consists of case presentation by the residents and discussion with Dr. Saleh. The remaining time of Grand Rounds normally consists of lectures and presentations from residents, faculty, staff, and guest lecturers.
Journal Club is held monthly, usually during dinner. Each month an appointed resident selects several articles for another resident to present. Each article is assigned to facilitate discussion and critical evaluation of an OB/Gyn related topic.
To date, 100% of all graduating residents have successfully completed American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOBOG) certification on 1st attempt.
The residency consists of a mixture of single, married and residents with children. The residency is conductive to raising family with very reasonable call schedule. Residents and family have 2 options for dental insurance. The resident and family also have medical insurance with prescription coverage. Toledo Ohio is an intermediate size metropolitan community of 250,000. The area offers many cultural and entertainment venues, including a world class art museum and zoo. |
