How do I apply?
Applications will be accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
Our deadline for receipt of applications is December 15, 2006.

What are the application requirements?
We require a medical school Dean’s letter and transcript, three letters of recommendations, a letter (if available) from the Chair of the Department of Medicine. In addition, USMLE scores, curriculum vitae, and a personal statement are required. Once your application is complete, it is reviewed by our Resident Selection Committee, and selected applicants will be invited for an interview. We review all applications for qualified individuals.

Do you accept International Medical Graduates?
Yes.

Are there additional requirements for International Medical Graduates?
IMG’s must have a valid ECFMG certificate by match date. The above requirements also apply. St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center has a very diverse medical staff. We pride ourselves on our Graduate Medical Education department, and staff our residencies with physicians from all walks of life and many different cultures.

Clinical Experience
US Clinical Experience is not required, but is considered to be a “plus”. Research experience is also helpful but not required.

Visas
The institution will sponsor J-1 and H-1B visas. As we are a non-profit organization, The Immigration Service has found us to be exempt from the H-1B Visa cap. We offer H-1B Visas for outstanding applicants and only available to residents who have passed their USMLE Step 3. We accept the OPT for recent masters/PhD graduates as a bridge to an H-1B or J-1 Visa.

Do you offer pre-match positions?
We do offer pre-match positions for IMG’s, but on a limited basis to exceptional candidates.

USMLE Scores
We prefer that you pass USMLE step 1 and 2 on your first attempt (75 and above).

What is the selection process?
Due to the large volume of applicants, and because of time and space constraints, only about 15% of the applicants are selected for interviews. It is recommended that you apply as early as possible.

When do interviews begin?
We begin the interview process in mid-October and run weekly through mid-February.

What is the schedule for an interview day?
An average day begins at approximately 8:30 am. Applicants will interview with either the program director or associate director, and one faculty member. Either the chief resident or another resident will meet with you to show you around our facility/clinic. We are looking for well qualified, mature team players.

Once the interview season is completed, applicants are ranked with NRMP and the match occurs in March.

Number of positions
We have 8 PGY 1 positions and possibly 2 PGY 3 positions available for the upcoming year.

Call schedules
Residents take call when they are on a medical ward, intensive care service or night float. Overnight call is every 4th night on the floors and occurs no more than every 3rd night in the ICU and CCU. To assure compliance with the 80-hour work week, we have instituted a program of daytime coverage to allow the overnight call team to leave by 1 pm the following day. Under unusual circumstances, residents on elective rotations may be asked to do night call.
