TRAINING PROGRAM

The Internal Medicine Residency will emphasize comprehensive training in ambulatory and inpatient general internal medicine and subspecialties. The residents will have the opportunity to work in areas of academic or community based internal medicine practice or to pursue training in various medicine subspecialties. Training will occur at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and the Medical University of Ohio at Toledo.

CONFERENCES

Numerous teaching conferences are held on a regular basis at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. House staff is encouraged to attend most of the teaching conferences as the topics covered in conferences are meant to address clinical scenarios commonly seen on the wards. Because of the patient care responsibility, residents may not be able to attend all conferences, but it is expected that they will attend at least 60%. Food is usually provided at the conferences.

CORE CURRICULUM CONFERENCES

A set of core conferences has been developed to cover important clinical topics. These conferences will be held three times a week during the months of July, August and September each year. These teaching sessions help to prepare the first year resident to efficiently manage various medical emergencies. Second and third year residents also attend these meetings. All first year residents will receive training and certification in advanced life support before starting training.

MORNING REPORT

Morning report is held Monday-Thursday from 7:30 -8:30 a.m. Attendance at morning report is mandatory for house staff and medical students. House staff selects and presents patient's case from the previous night's admissions, providing a full description of the clinical work-up, diagnosis, and treatment. A faculty member is always present to guide and supervise the discussion. Based on the excellent opportunity to learn and the warm learning environment, morning report at St. Vincent is extremely popular with the house staff.

XRAY CONFERENCE

A weekly x-ray conference is held every Friday morning. House staff is instructed in the interpretation of radiological studies. This conference is conducted by Dr. Vijay Mahajan, program director and recipient of the “Best Volunteer Clinical Teacher” in the United States by the American College of Physicians and Academy of Internal Medicine. Once again, this remains a very popular conference on our campus.

CARDIOLOGY CONFERENCE

Cardiology faculty conducts a weekly cardiology conference. House staff is instructed in EKG interpretation and management of various cardiac disease processes.

ACID BASE CONFERENCE

This conference is held every two weeks. This conference involves weekly cases and discussion of acid base chemistry as it may be applied to clinical situations.

JOURNAL CLUB

Journal Club is held twice per month. Journal articles will be discussed under close supervision of a faculty member. House staff learns to critique medical literature and learn from recent advances in medicine.

CPC AND MORBIDITY CONFERENCE

This conference is held monthly. Faculty and house staff from Internal Medicine, Radiology, and Pathology participates.

In addition to the above conferences, numerous other ongoing specialty conferences are held at the medical center. Residents are encouraged to attend these conferences if their schedule permits.

SCHEDULES

First year residents can be expected to have approximately 9 months of inpatient internal medicine exposure to provide a broad experience in general medicine. Residents have a half-day of continuity clinic every week along with two months of elective rotations during the first year. Interns serve as the primary physicians responsible for the patients under their care. They provide the initial assessment of the patient, and are supported by a member of the teaching team. A member of the teaching team will electronically enter orders on the patient. St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center is in active transition of the electronic health records and order entry. Other physicians are strictly discouraged from entering orders without discussing the case with the house staff.

Second year residents are responsible for the supervision of first year residents, students, and the overall operation of the clinical service. They provide instruction to students and first year's residents. They can also expect to spend time in elective subspecialty rotations, including ambulatory medicine. The residents will continue to attend their ongoing outpatient clinics.

Third year residents have the opportunity to spend increasing amounts of time on elective rotations. They may, however, be involved in supervision of ward services as well. Third year residents will continue to be active in the ambulatory clinic in order to perform a tutorial role for younger residents. Third years may also elect to spend time involved in one of the many research opportunities available at St. Vincent's during their elective time. Residents will be encouraged to prepare scholarly presentations for regional or national meetings.
