INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
I thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center prides itself in being the largest teaching hospital affiliated with the Catholic Health System in the region. Catholic Healthcare Partners is one of the largest Catholic healthcare systems in the United States, serving a large population of patients every day in five different states.
Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center has been involved in the post graduate medical education of excellent physicians for more than 50 years. Our institution serves to educate physicians from a number of medical specialties. As a major teaching hospital for the University of Toledo, students, residents, and fellows in all specialties are provided a chance to spend a considerable part of their training at Mercy St. Vincent. Additionally, our medical center supports free standing residencies in Emergency Medicine, Podiatry, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Transitional Year residency, and Osteopathic internship.
In July, 2006, Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center entered a new phase in our tradition of excellence. We started an Internal Medicine residency on our campus. We have been a major teaching site and affiliate of University of Toledo since 1964 in training internal medicine residents. We still continue this affiliation with the University. This association will offer residents a unique opportunity to train at University of Toledo Medical Center; in addition to instruction at a community based, academic tertiary care medical center.
Our primary aim for the internal medicine residency is a total commitment towards your development as either an internist for the practice of internal medicine or further training as a subspecialist. The program will offer opportunities for growth as a self-dependent internist, while providing the required supervision and mentoring needed in becoming an excellent physician. You will have the opportunity to be completely responsible for the care of your patients while under direct supervision of senior residents and attending physicians. Additionally, you will serve as a mentor for medical students and your colleagues that Mercy St. Vincent educates on a daily basis. Finally, interactions with fellows in various subspecialties such as cardiology, pulmonary/critical care, nephrology, infectious disease will be a part of you daily routine at Mercy St. Vincent. During your three years of training, you will also rotate at the University of Toledo for select electives.
Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center is a core teaching site for Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Students of osteopathic schools of medicine are actively recruited to this program. The faculty includes highly qualified, scholarly physicians who are superb teachers and practitioners of medicine. We also have students that rotate with us from Ross University, American University of Antigua, and Windsor University.
At Mercy St. Vincent, you will be working along side excellent clinical faculty, recognized both locally and nationally as the best in their respective fields. The program is directed by Vijay Mahajan, M.D., and Srinivas Katragadda, M.D. The most important responsibility of these individuals is the welfare of the residents, ensuring an excellent learning environment, free from unnecessary distractions and/or service obligations. The majority of our clinical faculty are board certified in Internal Medicine in addition to various subspecialties of medicine. Many have been recognized on various levels for their commitment to excellence in teaching and patient care. Dr. Mahajan has been distinguished as the “Best Volunteer Clinical Teacher” in the United States by the American College of Physicians and Academy of Internal Medicine.
In addition to clinical and educational responsibilities, many of our faculty are actively involved in cutting edge research in multiple medical disciplines. The major research areas include infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, and sleep medicine. Residents will have ample opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects in hopes of furthering the practice of medical science.
I greatly appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to meeting you in the very near future.
